The Uni-vibe is a foot pedal operated phase shifter that creates chorus and vibrato effects intended for use with an electric organ or an electric guitar. Introduced by Shin-ei (Univox) in the 1960’s the Univibe was supposed to emulate the classic Doppler sound of a Leslie speaker. Leslie speakers were a large combined amplifier and speaker unit in which the speakers rotated to create the Doppler Effect – Leslie cabinets were most commonly used with Hammond Organs.
Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, David Gilmour
Although the UniVibe was not a highly accurate Leslie Cabinet emulator it became an effect pedal synonymous with some of the great guitarists including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Robin Trower and Jimi Hendrix.
Machine Gun, – Bridge of Sighs
The effects of the univibe can be clearly heard on Jimi Hendrix live “Machine GUn” on the Band of Gypsies album and the title track from Robin Trowers album “Bridge of Sighs”.
The original Univibe pedals are becoming increasingly rare so expect high prices for an original, vintage Univibe pedal.
